For my first full-time job in 25 years and after a lifetime in New York City and upstate New York; I'm in Mountain View, CA for the second of three two week trips. The culture shock is subtle but it's a shock nonetheless. Yes, everyone speaks the same English as back in NYC and wears roughly the same clothes, but there are subtle differences that don't lie beneath the surface so much as to give the surface of daily life a different texture if not a different shape.
Go watch the Sliders episode titled Eggheads (from season one, before Sliders started to suck). The world where celebrities were smart, not pretty or vulgar (sorry Paris, Fergie and Justin, back to your day jobs). A great quote was "Professor Arturo... My mom's your biggest fan, she has all of your textbooks!"
There's no place like "Weird Stuff" in New York and no co-workers who would've thought to take me there and get lost in it for over an hour (Thanks Ben and Eric).
More later,
---Raymond
